bierhaus

Went to The Curve with Louisa, Beatrice and Wei Jie yesterday. Since Louisa was there, we naturally went to Borders and ogled at books (Rant: I cannot believe they let another writer touch the Hitchhiker series! Eoin Colfer is nowhere like Douglas Adams! Just because he's funny and lets fairies use guns, you think he can replace Douglas Adams?! Their styles are completely different. Where Colfer excels in making characters that are fantastically good in what they do, Douglas Adams excels in making characters that are fantastically good at sucking. It'll never be the same). Then we wandered around and descended upon toy stores to get Amy a pointless birthday present.

Of course, that was not the point of this trip. We were there for Bavarian Bierhaus.

It felt like a family type of place. Friendly atmosphere, beautiful use of wooden furnishings, and okay service. Food was brilliant! My linguine vongole had 33 juicy clams. Wei Jie and Beatrice liked the bratwurst so much, they didn't feel weird eating (and slicing) what looked like a penis. They didn't like the pickles though (which looked like pubes). Louisa had a salad which I obviously had no interest in.

Drinks. Beatrice had a Zombie, which was green. She wasn't too impressed with it, since the burning aftertaste was weak. Wei Jie had Sex At The Beach, and no one knew why it's called that since it's a dirty olive green. Beatrice's comment on drink: No Sex. I had Bay Breeze, which was orange and tasted like orange juice. Louisa who wanted Zombie ordered Singapore Sling instead. I didn't like it because it brought back memories of cough syrup, but it had loads of kick. Wei Jie had 3 sips, and then he was a goner. Fella seriously cannot hold his alcohol.

Since we (excluding Wei Jie) were still sober, another round of drinks. I had Absolut with soda, that I liked very much. Beatrice had gin and tonic, which she didn't like. Wei Jie had whiskey with coke, that just tasted like coke. At this point, Louisa made Wei Jie say some tongue twisters which amused her to no end. I couldn't care less and concentrated on the vodka.

Still not drunk. Shared a Budweiser. At this point, Louisa and Wei Jie started singing and I was beginning to get pissed off because they were having the alcohol-induced fun that I cannot seem to get. Beatrice was just quietly watching. A drunk Wei Jie may be entertaining at first, but he gets very repetitive and downright boring after a while. Decided to stop trying to get drunk. Huge bill increased feeling of pissed-offness. It's so expensive to get drunk!

Now I am down with Louisa's flu and much much poorer. Not a very enjoyable outing, but an experience nonetheless. Feeling crabby since I have been breathing out of my mouth the entire day. Do you want photos? I'm too lazy to upload now. Need to concentrate on breathing.

another reason to love George Orwell

Ironic Poem About Prostitution

George Orwell

When I was young and had no sense
In far-off Mandalay
I lost my heart to a Burmese girl
As lovely as the day.

Her skin was gold, her hair was jet,
Her teeth were ivory;
I said, "for twenty silver pieces,
Maiden, sleep with me."

She looked at me, so pure, so sad,
The loveliest thing alive,
And in her lisping, virgin voice,
Stood out for twenty-five.

Posting this because Shahril and Zhen Hwang asked to.

The thing about George Orwell is, his words mean different things each time you read them. There are so many layers, so many angles, so many interpretations. But most importantly, this poem brings out bitter laughter, a damn hard emotion to evoke. You laugh, but inside, you're sad that a girl with such outward innocence can be bought (and not even in gold). I can only wish I can write like him. So much depth in so little words. Questioning the appearance of purity (or lack thereof), capturing a part of colonial Vietnam, giving true emotion to one of the most hated of industries (though the most eternally flourishing). And yet we laugh at this desecration of virginity.

Please, read it aloud, as I did. Lovely rhythm and rhyme.

I quote a girl who heard me: I love your poem! When I hear, feel like, seduced.

I suppose Mr. Orwell gets most of the credit...

She actually said 'seduced'! :D :D :D

Edits: Smudged out ID and IC numbers, and the bit of my signature; switched to B&W mode and adjusted highlights and shadows for clarity. Everything else is evidence.

Sources verify that this is the first of three scrolls of ancient magic that I need to make cash disappear from my wallet.

Low Yat is like a permanent PC Fair! Thank god I didn't bring much cash. Level upon level of temptation. I salivate to no end. Nice atmosphere too. A beautifully delicate balance of How Low Can Your RM Limbo? Everyone is here for a bargain, and all the shopkeepers know that. So they go "Best Price! Cheap!" and wink at you like they're only giving it to you. But you know that's not the best price cause she goes and does it to the hot guy with more gusto. Hence, formulated strategy: only buy from male / motherly people. Because I am female (with untuned gaydar) / can make self look hopelessly lost.

Just thought this was funny because you'd expect the competition to be cut-throat around here.

Yan, I don't know if you'll count this as bargaining, but I did talk to him about cycling in UTAR, Lookout Point, the mooncake festival, part-time jobs, the effect of resistance on sound quality, and jogging. Also, I effectively pointed in the general direction of his crotch and said

Can you take it off for me?
Uh..
The Spark.
Wha-?
mp3 player.
Oh. Heh. Okay.

Amy said I was flirting, but I think that borders on sexual harassment. Everything I say sounds wrong! Come on. You know you're thinking of all the wrong things "The Spark" can be...

Anyway.

Introducing!

This spells the end of social interaction for me.
