Yes, I admit I am a pampered kid who never had to wash her own clothes before. But now.... I wash my clothes everyday. By hand. And I do NOT love it. Every day, at 12am, I will stoop to pick up the day's dirty clothes. Then, I will dump them into a pail and proceed to pour in detergent and water. I wrestle with the clothes for a while, because Chemistry Form5 dictates that detergent requires a certain amount of "mechanical agitation" in order to do their job. So I agitate my clothes. After that, I let them soak for as long as my patience allows. Then I agitate my clothes again. And again. And again. Until the suds are gone. It doesn’t end here. I then have to soak them in softener for 2 minutes. That done, I agitate them to remove the softener. Lastly, I hang them up.
There is something mechanical and pedantic about doing laundry that I find so oppressing and burdensome. It’s like homework. Minus the intellectual satisfaction.
Laundry has to be done everyday – a lesson I just learnt, having been doing effing laundry for 3 whole hours last night after 1 week of procrastination.
Laundry has to be done systematically – the steps have to be followed, and no fooling around. I once added detergent and softener at the same time, the rationale being I can do two things at once, reducing the amount of agitation. Doesn’t work. Both cancel each other out. Extra work on that hellish day.
Laundry makes me tired – the amount of agitation I do… And my back hurts. And my neck and my arms.
Laundry takes up a lot of my time – one hour a day. For ONE day’s laundry.
Now I understand why nudists do what they do. Not that I was opposed to nudism before. I just thought they were rather eccentric and amusing. But now I see the reason behind their madness. Imagine how little laundry they have! Heaven! Who cares about all the lofty notions of celebrating the human body and etc etc? They don’t need to do laundry! Genius! Let’s go nude.
However, seeing as I am bound by societal norms and widely-held and aggressively enforced views of public decency, I have recently taken to wearing the same clothes for 2 days in a row to reduce my amount of laundry. No, I don’t stink. There are stuff called anti-bacterial deodorants, y’know. And they actually work. The advertisements weren’t for suckers after all! Let’s see if they can last for three ;)
